Unlocking iPhone Process: Successful for Some, Exhausting For Others

by Iphone Apps on April 9, 2012

What can be more huge than AT&T has to offer its clients?

Now you can buy your iPhone from AT&T and use any SIM carrier you want once you fulfill your contract. This is because AT&T has decided to start unlocking off-contract iPhones . Last Friday, it was announced that AT&T would offer SIM unlocks for iPhones that were no longer under contracts. One of the benefits for this new plan,it permits any user of mobile service from local carriers during international travel. The Next Web shows the details of the standard steps :

The process is painless and only takes a few minutes in the chat. The only piece of information required by AT&T is the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, which can be found under Settings>General>About on your device.

Once you’ve completed the procedure, Apple pushes the unlock code during the next 72 hours to your email address, so the code comes from the mothership, not from AT&T. Once Apple completes the unlock request, a customer has to back-up and restore and tether the device to iTunes to complete the unlock process.

Hence, if you have iPhone that has fulfilled the contract period, then you will be able to use any other SIM around the world.

MacRumors shares the experiences of some AT&T’ s clients . The responses of some AT&T service representatives seem confusing. They were not fully aware of the process . On the other hand, other representatives went through the whole process successfully.

Specific details about the confirmation email from AT&T

Some people unfortunately were not that lucky:

I called the AT&T toll free number, told the person I wanted to unlock my iPhone. He asked me to provide him with the IMEI; I did. He then placed me on hold (for a nerve-racking length of time) while he looked for my account (I already told him of my above circumstances). He said I’m not on their system; and he asked if I had proof of purchase. I didn’t (because of the above).
He went ahead and submitted (whatever), and he told me unlocks take 5-7 business days and that I’m to expect the unlock to occur (by/on) the 16th of April.

While others got extremely lucky:

I called AT&T Tech Support and was able to get my iPhone 3GS unlocked no problem. In fact, the representative waited on the line to ensure I received my unlock confirmation email, at which point he told me to backup and restore my phone to receive my unlock. I did this and was able to receive my unlock IMMEDIATELY.

Consequently, the service is getting better .Some callers are lucky enough to expect a confirmation e-mail in 48-72 hours while others unfortunately had to be a bit more patient as their process can be held on till the 16th of April. Good luck guys.
